“Poverty Train” by Laura Nyro

“I just saw the devil, and he’s smiling at me.”

Somehow I find another spot for a song from one of my desert island albums. This is not the best song on “Eli and the Thirteenth Confession”, but that line gets to me so powerfully. Sometimes I’ll listen to this song just to hear that line. How many times in my life have I had that feeling?

Also, like I said, the rest of this album is amazing. Whenever someone asks me about Laura Nyro, I always describe her as “a little white girl with a whole lot of soul”. This album displays that impeccably. Laura Nyro has been gone nearly two decades now, but that soul will never die.
